1.1 What happened to the acc.umu.se domain?

Umeć university decided in 2022 that private email and web is no longer allowed to exist as a sub domain to umu.se. Because of this ACC needed to move those services to another domain. ACC chose accum.se as a new primary domain, with ac2.se and academiccomputerclub.se as alternatives for members with other preferences.

1.2 Is ACC the same thing as TSDF?

ACC stands for Academic Computer Club and is the new name of Teknologsektionens Datorförening (TSDF) since October 6 1997, established after leaving Teknolog Sektionen (TS).

1.3 Where can I find the ACC staff when I have problems?

Look at our support-page.

1.4 Can anyone become an ACC member?

No, only students and staff at Umeć University can become members.

1.5 What does an ACC membership cost?

The present membership fee is 50 swedish crowns per semester. The amount is established on the annual meeting.

1.6 How do I pay the membership fee?

Use our BankGiro to pay the membership fee, otherwise our automated system can't process your payment.
Remember to use the right OCR-reference when paying. To retrieve the correct OCR reference and the account number to use, please visit the information page regarding payment. Note that we don't accept payments which lasts over the summer, ie. on the autumn period you can pay for the whole year and during the spring period you can only pay for the current period (up to the summer).

2.1 How do I log in from home?

Use an SSH client, see the login page for more information.

2.2 How do I change my password?

To change your password, login on our computers with SSH and then use the command passwd and follow the instructions on screen.

2.3 HELP! I have forgotten my password!

Come visit us on our support.

2.4 Can I get back deleted files?

We take backups each night, so if you're missing a file that you want back then please contact support as soon as possible so we can try to restore the file for you.

2.5 What computers can I log into?

See the login page for more information.

2.6 From what computers can I log into ACC?

You can log into the ACC system from just about any computer connected to the Internet. In order to do this you must have an SSH client.

2.7 Group accounts

2.8 How do I get access to the computer lab?

Read the rules (only in Swedish). If you accept them, contact support and request access to our computer lab. We need to know your ACC username and your UmU-ID.

3.1 Being a member, do I get to have my own homepage?

Sure, you can place your own homepage on ACC. The address will be https://www.accum.se/~username/

3.2 How much space do I have for my homepage?

You can store up to 64 Gigabytes in total on your ACC user account.

3.3 Why do I get the error message: "Forbidden. You don't have permission to access..." when accessing my HTML-files?

You must set the correct access rights on your HTML files.
Use chmod 755 on directories and cgi-scripts, also chmod 644 on regular files. If you don't feel comfortable using chmod, then type fixchmod, this will take care of the access rights of your web pages for you.

3.4 Can I put up a homepage for my club (i.e sports association) on my ACC account, even though it isn't connected to UmU?

No! It is not allowed to keep sites for external organizations (this according to rules set by SUNET).

3.5 Why doesn't my homepage show up in the member-register ?

The page is updated once every day, so you've got to have some patience.

If you have waited for more than one day and your homepage isn't listed, make sure you have named your main-page index.html and nothing else.

3.6 Why doesn't CGI/SSI work on my page ?

If the www-server lets the CGI-call pass unmodified (ie. you can read text like <!--#include virtual="script.cgi" --> when the page is loaded in a browser), then the page is probably named incorrectly.

HTML-files must have the extension .html (small caps) to enable the www-server to parse them correctly. If you make your pages in a DOS/Windows environment it is common that they are named .HTM or something else.

4.1 Is there a webmail?

Yes. Our webmail is called Puss and is available from https://puss.accum.se. Use the link marked Log in and log in with your username and password to ACC.

4.2 Which settings should I use?

Here is a short list of the settings that you should use when you're setting up your email program for use with your ACC account:

  • Incoming server (IMAP): mail.accum.se (port 993)
  • Outgoing server (SMTP): mail.accum.se (port 465)
  • Secure connection (SSL): Yes (SSL/TLS, not STARTTLS)
  • Username: Your username at ACC (not the email address)
  • Password: Your password at ACC
  • Authentication Yes (the same username and password as for incoming server)

Please note that the outgoing server should be configured to use authentication. This makes the mail program use your username and password when you're sending email.

4.3 Change sender domain in Alpine

To send a single email from the old address, when composing a new mail move the cursor to the header section (where you enter the recipient etc) and type Control-R to see all the headers. Then change the sender in the From: field to the sender address you want for that particular email. This is useful for systems that require verification from the old email in order to change to a new one.

Client setting for sender domain in alpine (useful for instance if you prefer ac2.se as sender), is under [M]ain Menu; [S]etup; [C]onfig; User Domain.

4.4 Change sender domain in Mutt

To send a single email from the old address, start mutt and press colon : to enter commands, write the following lines (followed by enter):

 :set edit_headers=yes
:set envelope_from=yes

When composing a new mail all mail headers are visible, edit the From: header with the sender address that you want to use for that particular email. This is useful for systems that require verification from the old email in order to change to a new one.

Client setting for sender domain in mutt, useful for instance if you prefer the @ac2.se domain as sender, is changed by editing the configfile ~/.muttrc and append:

 set envelope_from=yes
set hostname="ac2.se"

4.5 Can I forward my mail to another address(es)?

Sure! Create a file named .forward in your home directory. This file should contain the address or addresses where your mail should be sent. To keep a local copy, this text should be in the file:
\yourusername, [email protected].

If you want to forward your mail to [email protected] then just log in using Putty/ssh and type:

nano .forward

This loads the nano editor. Then just write the email address that you want to forward to.

[email protected]

Save by pressing Ctrl-X and confirm with Y.

This works on most Unix-systems.

4.6 We need an alias for our group-account

4.7 How do I filter mail into different folders ?

This is achieved by creating a configuration-file to procmail called .procmailrc in your home-directory. Read the related manpages, namely procmailrc for detailed instructions and procmailex for ready-made examples.
The format of .procmailrc is rather tricky at first, but very powerful when you get a hang of it.

4.8 What is Greylisting?

ACC is using an anti spam/virus technique that is called Greylisting. It means that the first time a triplet sendingcomputer/senderaddress/receiveraddress is seen, our mail server says "please come back later". The next time (if it has waited at least 5 minutes) all such mails will be let through without delay. This means that the first time you get a mail from person X from computer Y, it will be delayed a bit, but all such mails after that will arrive directly. All legitimate mail servers should keep mails until the reciving computer has received the mail, but spammers doesn't do this as it's cheaper to ignore that. They will just move on to the next address in their spam list and try that instead. Mail virus will be limited as well as they will not retry, but just go on and try the next address instead.
As with all anti spam methods there are cases where legitimate mails will be stopped and never arrive, but that should be very rare since even if you are not using greylisting mail servers can say "I'm busy right now, come back later". If the sending server can't handle this, the mail will be lost. If they do, they are also violating the requirements for email servers on the Internet.

What should I do if a mail I want has been stopped?
It could take a little while before the sending server tries again, so wait a little first. If it still doesn't arrive - contact support and we will look into it.

5.1 Why can't I login through FTP?

We have closed down regular FTP since it sends passwords in cleartext, use SCP/SFTP instead. See the file transfer help.

6.1 Background

Umeć university has decided that private email and web is no longer allowed to exist as a sub domain to umu.se. Because of this ACC needs to move these services to another domain, which will replace @acc.umu.se and www.acc.umu.se.

6.2 Time plan

Umeć university insists on a short time span to do the move. From November 7th mail addressed to @acc.umu.se nor web pages from www.acc.umu.se are delivered. Mails bounce with a redirection message, and web pages are redirected to the new domain. This will end beginning next year.

6.3 New domain names

ACC has registered the following domain names, now owned by the association:

accum.se (ACC in UMeć) - the main domain of the association
ac2.se (ACC = AC^2)
academiccomputerclub.se (the really long name to write)

6.4 New default domain

accum.se is the new standard/default-domain for ACC. The decision was based on superior backing by members.

6.5 Incoming email

Incoming email works for all our domains, so you can start today with changing your email address at places where you have it registered. Regardless of the domain used, mails end up in the same mailbox. For example, if your username is example then [email protected], [email protected] and [email protected] works.

6.6 Outgoing email

Outgoing email from mail clients at ACC (ie. PUSS/Mutt/Alpine) has the default setting of @accum.se from Monday 2022-09-05.

6.7 Server settings for email

See email-settings for default settings. If you want to use another domain than the default accum.se, modify according to the following list:

6.8 Moving home pages

Access to web pages works for all domains. Given the username example then www.academiccomputerclub.se/~example , www.accum.se/~example and www.ac2.se/~example all works. We recommend to verify that your home page works regardless of domain name, a common error is having www.acc.umu.se hard coded in links instead of using relative links within the home page.

After November 7th all accesses to www.acc.umu.se is redirected to the new domain until end of year, when all access will stop.
